I will always treasure the fellowship, advice and mentoring I have received from John Phillips. He was such a friend to our church and to me personally.
Dr. Phillips was a special friend to me, and his writings have greatly influenced my ministry through the years. I will always be grateful that I had the privilege to know him and benefit from his insight into the Word of God.
The sermon on “The Colt” was inspiring indeed---so full of insight and information and wrapped in life-challenging application that is so typical of Dr. Phillips’ writing. Oh how he blessed me personally every time he opened God’s Word!
I recently discovered your commentary series and I’m really enjoying it. I now own “Exploring People of the Old Testament” Volumes 1-3…and I look forward to studying much more of your material.
I wanted to send a note to say how very much I enjoyed your exposition of the great book of Romans. I teach Bible at Golden State Baptist College in Santa Clara, CA and am going to use it as our text supplement for this fall. …I especially like how you stay true to the doctrinal standards of the historic faith. I realize how your works have must have helped many.
I am a pastor and instructor at Carolina Bible Institute and Seminary. I have used your Exploring Commentaries for many years for research, Bible study, sermon preparation and as textbooks in the classroom. I tell my students, “If you want to become better expositors of the Scriptures, study the works of the great expositors like John Phillips.”
Dr. Phillips, I wanted to thank you for your hard work and books. I now use your books as reference in my quiet time. The way you master the language is so skillful; it instills beauty and joy into the words. A fellow translator read “Exploring the Scriptures,” and she is equally impressed. Another friend reads your books when he has free time. We are all amazed that commentaries can be a poem, a song and also a story. In your hands, something simple and small becomes encouraging and enlightening.
Dr. Phillips, I just wanted to write to say how much your life’s work has meant to me. Whenever I preach on any subject or book, I always check to see if you have written on that subject. You are a huge blessing to me.
I just finished reading the Epistle of Peter…as usual, I laid the book down with a refreshing sigh and wiped the tears from my eyes…I’m thankful that God gave Dr. Phillips the extraordinary ability to “see” and understand the Word as he studied it, and the ability to express what he saw in so eloquent a way…and for the Holy Spirit who gives me light to be able to take in, relish and apply those wonderful truths.
I have been reading “The View From Mt. Calvary” and I cannot begin to describe how it is impacting my life…I do not believe any other [book] has had such a profound effect on my life…I will read and reread it until our Lord comes. It is as if Dr. Phillips had the power to transport the reader to the very foot of Jesus’ cross to breathe and intensely experience what our Lord was doing for each and every one of us who is willing to feel it deep within our souls.
